Ohio Society SAR Represented at Battle of Kings Mountain 237th Anniversary – Blacksburg, SC
On October 7, 2017, the Ohio Society SAR was represented at the 237th Anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain at the Kings Mountain National Military Park in Blacksburg, South Carolina. Marietta Chapter SAR President Steve Frash participated in the Wreath Laying Ceremony on behalf of the Ohio Society SAR at the United States Monument, the site of the October 7, 1780 battle that was the first major patriot victory to occur after the British invasion of Charleston, SC in May 1780.
In addition to the Ohio Society, present at the event were representatives from the South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, New Hampshire and Virginia Societies of the Sons of the American Revolution. The Central District SAR was represented by NSSAR Vice President General Robert Fish, and the South Atlantic District was represented by NSSAR Vice President General James Woods.
This years event is believed to be the largest ever held for the Battle of Kings Mountain Memorial services. A total of 150 wreaths were placed, and several hundred members and guests were present. The program was cut short because of the hard rains and the overcrowding of the small tent to keep the visitors dry. Several of the flintlocks misfired because of wet powder, however overall the program was a complete success.
