Patriotic Capt. Howard Miller Flag Collection Displayed in Pemberville, OH
On December 3rd, Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution President Col. (Ret) Donald C. McGraw, Jr. was the guest speaker at the Black Swamp Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter Luncheon in Pemberville, Ohio. Members of the John Hancock Chapter SAR were also in attendance at the event, held at the First Presbyterian Church in this Wood County village located approximately 20 miles south of Toledo.
Col. McGraw, assisted by Cincinnati Chapter SAR member James D. Schaffer, presented the Captain Howard Miller Flag Collection to the audience. The collection is comprised of 70 historical and patriotic flags that were assembled by Captain Howard Miller, a WWII veteran.
A vexillologist (authority on flags), Captain Miller and his wife traveled thousands of miles giving talks to many organizations throughout the country. When age became a handicap, he presented the collection to the Cincinnati Chapter SAR with the stipulation they be displayed at least once a year. Captain Miller passed away in 1991.
The presentation was well received and generated many questions from the attentive audience of descendants of patriots of the American Revolution.
