Knox Fall Meeting – Mount Vernon

The members of the General Henry Knox Chapter met Saturday morning September 10th to meet State Society President Don McGraw, who drove up from Cincinnati to be at the meeting in Mount Vernon. The members were very impressed to learn of Don’s West Point experience and his 34 years associated with the Artillery Division of the Army both tied to Henry Knox! (picture – left)

Cadet Anderson of the Jr. ROTC unit at the Knox Career Center made a presentation about Wreaths Across America and the unit’s efforts at Moundview Cemetery in Mount Vernon.  There are over 500 veterans buried in the Cemetery and there is a need for wreaths on Saturday, December 17, 2016. The Chapter agreed to sponsor 10 wreaths this year and send two continental  color guard to the event.(picture – right)

Finding John Smith was the presentation for the day.  Steve Kelley told the story of chasing down documents over twenty years and three dispersed states to make the family connection to a fourteen year-old waggoneer in the New Jersey militia in December 1779 as the Continental Army went into winter quarters near Morristown, New Jersey. Much to everyone’s delight there were pictures of the brick home that John built in Morris County, New Jersey and a book that outlined the history of each of the historic homes in the township.
