Ft. Laurens Unknown Patriot Remembered – Bolivar
The Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution hosted the National Society’s Annual Remembrance of the Unknown Patriot at Fort Laurens on July 30. 2016 in Bolivar, Ohio. Fort Laurens is the only revolutionary fort in Ohio. It was built on the Tuscarawas River in the Fall of 1778 and was operational through the winter into 1779. At least 29 men died and are buried at the site.
Over forty chapters presented wreaths at the tomb and there were representatives from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia present. The Featured Speaker was Joe Dooley from Virginia who is a dual member of Ohio and past President General of the National Society. Thomas Payne, the Central District Vice President General, also presented a wreath. The Northeast Ohio Chapter displayed their new chapter flag sown by their Ladies Auxiliary.
