Jim Lochary on Honor Flight – Columbus
2004 Ohio Society President James Lochary was on the last flight for 2014 for Columbus Honor Flight on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Jim who served during Korea spent the day with the Veterans in Washington DC touring the War Memorials for World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Also on the flight was Sam Ishida, a member of the 442 Infantry Unit. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the United States Army was a regimental size fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soliders of Japanese ancestry who fought in World War II, despite the fact that many of their families were subject to internment. Beginning in 1944, the regiment fought primarily in Europe during World War II,in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany. The 442nd is “the most decorated unit in U.S. military history.” It was awarded eight Presidential Unit Citations and twenty-one of its members were awarded the Medal of Honor for World War II. Its motto was “Go for Broke”. Paul Irwin of the Hocking Valley Chapter welcomes the Veteran home.
