U.S. Citizenship Ceremony – Mentor
On Friday, July 11, 2014, a Naturalization Ceremony was held at President James A. Garfield’s home, “Lawnfield”, a National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio. The Ohio Society Combined Color Guard of Western Reserve Society, Northeast Ohio Chapter, and Samuel Huntington Chapter presented and retired the colors for the ceremony.
20 people took the Oath of Citizenship as administrated by the Honorable William H. Baughman, U.S. District Magistrate Judge; Northern District of Ohio. There were remarks from John Eklund, Ohio State Senator 18th District; Ron Young, Ohio State Representative 63rd District; John Rogers, Ohio State Representative 60th District; and James A. Garfield III, President Garfield’s great-great-great grandson. Also, in attendance and greeting each of the new citizens was Rudolph Garfield, President Garfield’s great grandson.
The Boy Scouts, Mentor OH, led by Thom Seymour were earning a merit badge by attending and participating in the ceremony. Two of the scouts presented American flags to the new citizens.
The Ohio Society Combined Color Guardsmen included from Western Reserve Society – John Franklin, Hugh Harris, Lee MacBride and Claude Custer. From Northeast Ohio Chapter – Troy Bailey, Dan Matheke, Jim Gilbert, Steve Hinson, Don Taft, and Bob Howe (drum), and from Samuel Huntington Chapter – Robert Parvin.
