Honoring a Fallen Hero – Waverly

Residents came out in force Saturday to honor Sgt. Justin R. Helton on his final journey home to Pike County.

Helton, 25, of Beaver, Ohio was killed June 9 in a friendly fire incident in Southern Afghanistan.

Thousands of law enforcement vehicles and motorcycles joined the solemn procession from Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus down U.S. Route 23 on its way to Waverly. A route of 60 miles length.

In Pickaway County the procession was greeted by well-wishers all along U.S. Route 23, with concentrations of people in the South Bloomfield area and just south of Circleville, where thousands gathered to pay their respects. In Ross County, the procession passed through Chillicothe where again thousands stood at attention.

Color Guard members of the Hocking Valley Chapter, the Camp Charlotte Chapter, and the Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution paid their respects by standing watch along U.S. Route 23. Pictured below are members of the Camp Charlotte Chapter.
