Tour of Historic Kenyon – Gambier

The General Henry Knox Chapter held its Flag Day Meeting in Gambier, Ohio where they toured Kenyon College.  Several members noted that they had lived in Knox County their entire life, driven through Gambier, but had never walked the historic campus.

Tom Stamp from the college gave an excellent tour with stories from the early founding in 1824 by Bishop Chase to the tragic fire of Old Kenyon Dormitory in 1949 and its rebuilding stone for stone. (Old Kenyon pictured below today)

Famous Kenyon Graduates included David Davis, Lincoln’s Campaign Manager, Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s Secretary of War, Salmon Chase, Governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and Rutherford Hayes, President of the United States.
