Tri-State Christmas Celebration – Parkersburg, WV
The Annual Tri-State SAR/DAR Christmas Celebration was held the first Sunday of December at the Parkersburg Country Club. This year the featured speaker was the President General of the Sons of the American Revolution, Joe Dooley, who drove over the mountains from Virginia.
There were over 110 people in attendance from over 15 chapters of the DAR and SAR in West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. State Presidents and Regents from the three states were present, including Ohio’s SAR President George Ruch. The Central District Vice President General Lance Carter from West Virginia was also in attendance.
President General Joseph Dooley administered the oaths of office to the incoming officers of the Capt. James Neal Chapter, WVSSAR and the Marietta Chapter, during the meeting. Jean Yost was returning as President of the Marietta Chapter and Ted Cox was installed as the new President of the Capt. James Neal Chapter. Cox was presented with his president’s ribbon and gavel by WVSSAR President Ira Cook.
Chief Warrant Officer John Cochran, an at-large member of the West Virginia Society, was recognized for his military service with the presentation of the SAR’s War Service Medal. He is a highly decorated active duty Army officer who has completed four combat tours.
During his visit to Parkersburg , SAR President-General Joseph W. Dooley took time to lay a wreath at the gravesite of Revolutionary War Patriot Capt. James Neal. Capt. Neal recruited a company of men from West Augusta to be a part of 13th Virginia Regiment. He fought in battles of White Plains, Brandywine and Germantown. Neal is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg.
