To Try Men’s Souls – McConkey’s Ferry, PA
These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer solider and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the services of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. – the opening lines of the American Crisis, #1 December 19, 1776 by Thomas Paine.
The opening line is also the title of a historical novel by Gingrich and Forstchen that spent many weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. It is a good read and makes the reader appreciate the literary directness of Paine and the military daring of George Washington in what many consider the darkest times of the American struggle for Independence.
